Description

The new fire station and ambulance centre is located along the main road of the small town of Tanumshede. Its main function is to support the regional highway E6 with rescue and evacuation capabilities. The buildings are technically complex and logistically robust, meeting high environmental standards. A major part of the project centred on providing security and comfort for the personnel, in a safe and non-toxic working environment. The buildings are constructed with loadbearing prefabricated concrete façades. Within the robust shell, the fire station facility is organised around the main garage for the fire trucks. Surrounding the big space on the ground floor are facilities for washing cars and clothes, changing rooms, and education and meeting rooms. On the upper level are offices, dormitories and technical spaces. The buildings are differentiated through a simple shift in colour, red for the fire station and green for the ambulance station. The upper parts of the prefabricated concrete façade panels were painted in the factory, with red and green sheet metal overhangs over the garage doors and entrances added on site. The appearance of the complex negotiates the need for a rational and robust structure combined with the ambition to give the important new institution a civic presence.
