Description

The new extension is located in the second row of a sloping green suburban area. Thanks to its silver plywood façade with its striking grain, it expands the existing detached house facing the valley to create a harmonious ensemble. Sloping upwards toward the garden, the extension is tucked beneath an old walnut tree as a single storey pavilion. The chosen construction method of solid wood elements serves as a representation of this exciting balancing act. Indigenous wood is the primary material outside and inside and was used in a majority of the components. Larch and spruce wood are also used. Inside, the 6-metre high, load-bearing wall, leads from the entry over the stairs and into the generous living space. This room is held by solid wood walls with spruce slats, whilst unpainted clay plaster creates a warmer atmosphere in the private rooms. The photovoltaic unit mounted on the roof delivers electricity that far exceeds the demand and shares it with the surrounding neighbourhood. In addition, the geothermal probe and the hearth, which uses wood from the surrounding forests, complete the energy concept. The extension is an attempt at densification with the use of conventional building processes.
