Description

With the aim of making their wines known beyond the region, the Osterfingen viticulture cooperative renovated their 400-year-old Bergtrotte winery and added an extension, expanding it into a central information point, an iconographic flagship and a culinary venue. New event and restaurant rooms display the region’s wealth of offerings as well as providing a congenial backdrop for hospitality and gourmet delights. They make the interplay of tradition and innovation tangible while emphasising the sustainable treatment of the natural environment. Adding onto an historical building calls for restraint and clean lines to enhance the impression of both the old and new through contrast. The newly built annex derives its architectural quality from its own reserve and staging of rudimentary materials as an allegory for nature and landscape. In order to preserve the freestanding character of the existing building, the additional rooms are embedded into the north side of the slope. An erratic block that functions as a basic shelter for the imposing timber beam of the old wine press also creates a new atmospheric outdoor space that stretches between it and the old building. Inside, concealed lighting strips accentuate the elongated lines, while skylights strikingly bathe the rooms in natural light during the daytime. The new development gives the epicurean region a modern face and a commercially viable architectural monument. In conjunction with the architecture, the displays and catering make for a memorable visit, establishing a distinctive address for the region’s offerings.
