Description

The passage designed by OSA in Munich’s city centre leads visitors from Sonnenstrasse through a foyer, a central atrium and a second foyer to Herzog Wilhelm Strasse. The foyers each have a staircase and an elevator. The total space presents itself as an overall surface made of tombac, a brass-copper-zinc alloy, giving the impression of an abstract envelope. Slim bands of muted light, shining diagonally in sharp angles across the wall and ceiling surfaces, draw the gaze into the depths of the passage and onward to its centre, the atrium. From the entranceway, the light bands look like a dancing meander with depth effect. The cramped feeling of the original interior design, caused by the low ceiling heights, is given a deeper optical horizon in the new design, with a contour that makes it seem to flow off into the distance. The space appears dynamic, even when empty.
