Description

The school is located on the outskirts of Payerne, capital town of the Broye Region in the canton of Vaud. The building fits perfectly into its landscape on an elevated position in the foothills of the canton of Fribourg. Considering the complexity and range of purpose and function contained within the school, the campus calls to mind a small, self-contained urban environment. The enormous amount of space (18,000 m² gross floor space) is arranged in a sickle-shaped block made up of a series of buildings. The complex contains a long central court which opens to town and landscape along one side. The main entrances from this court close the building in on itself while generous apertures in the building open the court to the landscape, combining great views with protection from the elements. The inner concept of the building follows a functional split of the space into four separate parts, each with its own entrance and foyer allowing independent use. The upper ground floor contains the public functions with the library and restaurant. The 70 classrooms are situated on the lower ground floor and on the first and second floor. At both ends of the building the auditorium/assembly hall and three-tier amphitheatre complete the volume. A long corridor follows the shape of the building forming the school’s backbone. The corridor is flanked by sequences of classrooms with spatial expansions for recreation offering a great view over the landscape.
