Description
The new housing estate is located on the eastern slope of the Collina d’Oro in Lugano, adjacent to the old village centre of Barbengo. The property slopes down on the eastern side and opens up toward the south and north. Once used as vineyards, the terrain still has the typical terraced structure. A concrete wall forms a single line enclosing the complex and generates the retaining walls and boundaries for the outdoor areas, interrupted only by the houses’ façades. Although located at different levels on the slope, the five houses form a cohesive unit. The buildings respect the topography, sharing a central courtyard envisaged as a communal garden. Understated materials were selected that reinterpret the vernacular architecture. Parts of the garden will be replanted with vines, to continue the regional tradition whilst forging a connection between the different parts of the estate and the landscape.
