There is currently an acute need for space for school physical education classes. The Canton of Zurich was the first to express the necessity for temporary sports buildings, initially for the Freudenberg/Enge cantonal schools, the Uetikon am See cantonal school, and the Irchel campus of the University of Zurich. To meet this need, a temporary solution was developed with a modular structure that can be adapted to the specific local situation. Depending on the school and its requirements, the spatial programme of each sports hall can be modified and supplemented with ancillary rooms, which are prefabricated in the factory. The volume and colour scheme can also be customised, creating a fully-fledged urban and architectural solution in each case. The buildings have a timber frame structure visible on the outside, with windows set high in the walls. The vertical articulation of the structure dominates the appearance of the façade. To convey the temporary nature of the building, the façades are to be clad in transparent corrugated fibreglass panels that are visibly attached atop colourfully painted insulation, an overlay effect that creates an impression of depth and lightness. Additional sports buildings will follow at other locations and for other clients, such as the City of Zurich. The temporary facilities will serve as a regular physical education site for approximately six to fifteen years until the permanent locations are ready for occupancy. After that, they can be dismantled and reassembled at a new location or stored.
