Description
In order to maintain the existing access to park and pond, the space programme was divided into two separate buildings. The school building with its cantilevered end section has a generous forecourt with a prominent canopied entrance. The three- to four-storey structure is adapted to the terrain and seems to float in its green setting atop a band of ribbon windows. The sports hall is partly underground, enabling it to mirror the scale of the existing buildings around it. The heart of the school building is formed by the library, which extends over three floors. Space left on the second floor for an optional expansion has been turned into a sweeping rooftop terrace. The sum of a compact building volume, highly insulated thermal building envelope and a ventilation system with efficient heat recovery yields an exceptionally energy-efficient building with passive house qualities. Power generation using groundwater heat pumps and a photovoltaic system, as well as rainwater seepage on the school’s own property, further contribute to a coherent ecological concept.
