Description

The Ragnitzstrasse project involved building small and affordable but high-quality apartments. The design responds to these conflicting priorities as follows: A structurally simple, systematic and efficiently designed building volume houses all apartments. To the south, this structure is flanked by zigzagging balconies. The north side features a pergola for exterior access, protected by a screen of perforated metal. The building comprises 15 apartments (40–50 m²), a penthouse on the top floor and an underground car park. All apartments are south-facing and have a spacious balcony looking onto a green area. The balconies extend across the entire width of each apartment – thus augmenting the actual living space toward the outdoors and making the living rooms and bedrooms appear larger and airier. The wooden balcony railings fan out in response to the zigzag rhythm of the cantilevered base slabs. The materials and workmanship create a homely atmosphere.
