Description

Tenders for the complete renovation and expansion of the more than 100-year-old school building in the centre of the Tyrol community of Landeck were invited as part of an architectural competition in 2014. The goals for the renovation of the listed primary school were: more space for pupils, greater transparency, and a new organisation of the space to allow for up-to-date teaching methods. In a first step, the existing building structure that was worth retaining was renovated, then the central section was demolished to make way for a new classroom wing. An annex in the schoolyard houses a sunken sports hall, the glass school hall and, on the roof, a generous terrace made of larch. It was important both to the architects and the town to reinforce the fact, through the dominant position on the square, that the quality of the listed building was worth preserving. The main entrance was moved to the «floating» annex on the west. Visitors now encounter a harmonious symbiosis of old and new, anchored by a green school park. During the entire development process, the wishes of the school management team were taken into consideration. Open learning environments on the two upper levels offer plenty of daylight, space for moving around and views of the interior as well as the outside. The existing walls were partially opened up and replaced with mobile room dividers. Now, classrooms that are next to each other can be separated or combined as required.
