Description
At the House of Representatives in Berlin, the offices and meeting rooms for the members of parliamentary groups were to be extended. The slightly inclined roof spaces overlooking the courtyards were used for this purpose. The aim was to carry out this intervention in the historic building, which was converted in the early 1990s into a modern parliament, as gently as possible. The extended spaces were thus integrated into the existing roof landscape with its low roof pitches. The extension inserts itself into the powerful attic storey of the existing building and is hence nearly invisible. Skylights help to compensate for the resulting low ceiling height in the office spaces. The newfound space is enclosed in a cladding of horizontally arranged anodised aluminium rectangular profiles and flush-mounted windows, which, like a cockpit, afford views onto the silhouette of nearby Potsdamer Platz and the wide-open »sky over Berlin«.
