Description
The aim of this project was to create a companion structure to the existing library in Linz that would perform its task in terms of function and urban design while respecting the existing building. The building was therefore designed as one adjusting piece that would fit the existing building precisely and eliminate any “competition” between the old and the new building. It is a perfect match. Both parts of the building are connected by a joint that can adapt to different conditions. The heart of the building is an atrium, which refers to the former courtyard. This central space accommodates the main information point and functions as an important communication medium. The existing building thus serves the new customer-oriented library although its structure remains unattached. The function and construction of the old book storehouse are preserved and opened up to the public in order to present its spatial characteristics.
