Description
In the heart of Frankfurt’s Old Town, the historical buildings housing the city Historical Museum are set atop the old fortifications – among them the oldest standing building in Frankfurt. Built between the 12th and 19th centuries, the ensemble of five different buildings was subjected to so many alterations over the years as to render the interiors unrecognisable. The ensemble has now been renovated substantially and brought up to the technical standard of a modern museum. The historical building fabric that still existed was preserved and more recent additions were brought up to date. The refurbishment reinforces the ensemble as a whole while also restoring to the individual building sections with their varying period styles their own singular identities, both inside and out. Each part of the complex regained its own autonomous access points: reactivated historical spiral stairways and complementary new staircases allow visitors to experience the historic spaces in a new constellation.
