Description
The Ruhr Museum in the coal washing plant at Zeche Zollverein has been a special challenge for museum and exhibition design. The cultural and historical importance and the striking inventory of machines inside the building forced the team of Prof HG Merz to deal with its spatial conditions in a sensitive and inventive way. A distinct appearance was given to the exhibition that stands in clear contrast to the building’s architecture. Besides the modest exhibition architecture the concept focuses on the simplicity of spatial structures and lucid and plain guidance of the museum’s visitors. Together with L2M3 and jangled nerves the designers created a museum that is as unique as the coal washing plant itself.
