Description
The project goal was to make a 1936 villa suitable for housing three generations of the family. The original layout of the top floor, with three small rooms, kitchen, bathroom and attic, was altered completely to create a large living and dining room with open kitchen. The visible interior geometry of the hip roof now creates a sheltering, »tent-like« effect in the space, which is reinforced by the base of the surrounding jamb wall. The dormers cut into the walls, forming seating niches at the windows. Together with the timber framework, the old chimneys, as free-standing »sculptures«, zone and articulate the space into different room sequences. Depending on the perspective, the space conveys a feeling of either closeness or spaciousness. A new room cell on the upper storey divides an existing room into bedroom, bathroom and library. Mirrored hatches allow various spatial effects and constellations to be created amongst the various rooms.
