Description
In 2006 the architectural practice Riegler Riewe Architects Pty.Ltd. won an international competition to build a new laboratory for Boehringer Ingelheim Pharma GmbH & Co. KG in Biberach an der Riß in southern Germany. From the perspective of urban planning, the building marks the endpoint of the area’s development and also the endpoint of the tree-lined main road on the factory premises. The depth of the building is the result of the internal organisation of the building’s functions and the demand for attractive recreational areas to provide an adequate work environment. Based on an optimized building outline that facilitates the organisation of the biggest work groups per building level, a building structure is developed that creates different-sized loggias in the building’s outer shell and multi-level voids inside the building. Combined with staircases and corridors, an open system of short cross-connections and spatially widened longitudinal connections is established, providing views either to the next lower or higher level inside the building or to the exterior.
