Description
The
expanded space of minimal housing
This public-interest housing project completes the Pré-Colomb neighbourhood
plan in Versoix, working within a predefined orthogonal volume while softening
its rigidity. Within the strict dimensional limits imposed by the local
building code, the design is a typological exercise in spatial dexterity,
showing how constrained floor areas can still create generosity. Rooms placed
at the ends of each apartment as flexible, closable spaces inspired by a traditional
layout adapt to changing household needs – able to serve as guest rooms, shared
living spaces or for remote work. At the same time, they open up the space visually
toward the kitchen and loggia, giving the impression of larger, articulated areas.
Continuity of movement and sightlines further enhances both liveability and the
perception of openness. Generous outdoor extensions form a second strategy,
strengthened by the COVID-19 redefinition of domestic comfort. Seamlessly integrated
into the building and connected to kitchens and living areas, they blur
interior and exterior through specially designed railings and filters, offering
varying degrees of openness and appropriation as true outdoor rooms.
Bio-based construction in cast hempcrete
Terracotta masonry coated with hempcrete – the first façades of this kind in Western
Switzerland – provides thermal insulation and an exterior finish while creating
a breathable envelope. Exposed brick emphasises the domestic character of the
outdoor extensions.
