Description
The
residential building in Lucerne’s Seetal valley demonstrates how densification
can be achieved in rural areas and beyond conventional construction concepts. The
building was constructed without thermal insulation, metal or chemical building
materials. The solid timber construction is glue-free, and all interior
surfaces have been left untreated to ensure the reusability of the materials in
line with the principles of the circular economy. The façades are clad with
rough-sawn timber formwork. The floor slabs are emphasised by friezes on the
façade, which also articulate the building. The friezes, windows and sun
protection are – just like the other elements of the timber construction –
subtly joined and can be easily dismantled. The access core is made entirely of
layered, recycled tamped concrete, without reinforcing steel. The staircase
rests on beams made of prefabricated elements, which are placed on the tamped
lift walls. The structural principle of compressive strength works thanks to
the mass of the tamped concrete, the elements and the balanced distribution of
forces within the staircase. The floor plan is based on a simple, historical
chambered typology. The transitions between the chambers are visible in the
floor in the form of wooden thresholds – making the spatial concept and wooden
construction coherent. All rooms unfold from this centre.
