Description
The early 19th-century
industrial building is a strong testament to early industrialisation and the
use of the River Worble’s water power. A mill race along the base once drove
production and shaped the spatial structure. Over time, the building was
repeatedly extended and adapted; the current transformation continues this
process, translating it into a contemporary residence. The architectural
approach is based on a careful continuation of the existing fabric. Historical
traces such as wear marks in the masonry, ceiling openings and circulation
corridors remain visible and define the identity. New elements are clearly
legible as contemporary interventions, creating deliberate contrasts. The
tripartite division into south, central and north sections is retained and
structures the new programme. The former threshing floor becomes the central
access and communal space, linking the apartments and the roof level. An
internal courtyard brings daylight deep into the building and establishes
visual connections. Interventions were limited to what is necessary. Unexpected
structural weaknesses required targeted reinforcement, particularly in the
balconies. These measures meet current standards while harmonising with the
historical appearance of the building.
