Description
Lionza is a small settlement in the Centovalli in
Ticino, above Borgnone. It is listed in the ISOS, the Federal Inventory of
Swiss Heritage Sites of National Importance. The two converted rustici (traditional stone houses) are part of a group of former agricultural buildings
that have been converted into residences. The exterior granite masonry retains
its character and is to be repaired where necessary. The granite roofs are
rebuilt using traditional craftsmanship. A new timber frame structure,
constructed of spruce, is inserted into the existing stone buildings. This
timber frame forms the new internal structure and is also the visible material
in the interior. This consistent use of materials demonstrates an honest
approach to construction, while the timber forms a pleasing contrast to the rugged
natural stone façade. In the larger rustico, a spatial sequence unfolds from
the upper level, which accommodates a living space with a fireplace, dining and
cooking areas. A spiral staircase leads down to the sleeping level, where a
prefabricated timber core separates the bedroom from the dressing area. A guest
room has been added to the former stable extension. The smaller rustico is
designed as an open loft space, combining a bedroom in the attic with living
and cooking areas below. Across the project, granite and spruce dominate – two
authentic materials that belong to the place and are deeply rooted in the
traditional building culture of the region.
