Description
Located directly by the
boat landing on Greifensee lake in Uster, the single-storey pavilion is defined
by its six distinctive roofs. With roof surfaces projecting outwards on all
sides, the building addresses both the lake and the bus stop to the north,
becoming a connecting place between landscape, infrastructure and public life. The
volume is composed of six equally sized square units, each with its own roof.
The roofs, with skylights, remain open at the centre as tent-like load-bearing
structures that fulfil different functions. In the restaurant, two roofs shape
the spatial atmosphere, while in the outdoor areas individual roof modules
provide targeted protection from weather and sun. Above the kitchen, the roof
space is used for building services. The generously glazed restaurant opens up
unobstructed views towards the lakeshore landscape and the lake. Like an
umbrella, the rafters are arranged radially around the skylight. Dark-stained
spruce, filled with reeds, gives the structure warmth and depth while creating
a connection to the materiality of the surrounding environment. Two covered
outdoor areas featuring independent roof forms protect guests from the sun by
the lake and from rain at the kiosk. Along the façade, beneath the open roof
surfaces, benches are arranged like those familiar from tram stops in the city.
They invite walkers to take a short break, making the pavilion a public meeting
place.
