Description
EKT, the energy and data
provider for the Canton of Thurgau, is developing a new operations centre in
Sulgen. The precisely positioned timber building creates an identity-forming
hub with a clear address and public presence. Conceived as an autonomous solitary
structure, it complements the existing ensemble, reinforces the spatial order
and allows scope for future extensions. Offset upper floors articulate the
compact volume and give the building a distinctive yet contextually appropriate
appearance. Structurally, the new building follows a consistently sustainable
logic. Above the ground-contact reinforced concrete elements, a pure timber
construction was realised. Three-storey-high stacked glued laminated timber
trusses form the primary load-bearing system and enable flexible floor plans
with minimal internal supports. In the office levels, recyclable and
health-conscious materials define the working environment. Spruce timber
partition systems, timber-frame constructions with hemp-fibre-reinforced clay
boards, and clay plasters create a robust workspace characterised by material
authenticity and a balanced indoor climate. Interior planting supports the
microclimate and enhances employee well-being. The compact organisation reduces
circulation areas and resource consumption. Central communication zones and a
roof garden encourage social exchange. The MINERGIE-A-certified building
combines energy efficiency, renewable materials and long-term adaptability.
