Sport Arena, Vienna
Description
Between
the Danube, the Prater and Ernst Happel Stadium, the new Sport Arena Wien was
built on the site of the former Ferry Dusika Stadium – a modern, multifunctional
sports centre offering space for a wide variety of sports under one roof. It is
a unique facility combining three independent sports areas and a modern
intensive training centre, distributed across several vertically stacked
levels. The arena serves year-round as a training and event venue and meets nearly
all of its own energy needs. The building combines a ball sports arena,
gymnastics hall, athletics hall, and cardio and strength areas within a
compact, vertically layered structure. Large glass façades create transparency,
allow sports activities in daylight, and open the building toward the
surrounding green landscape, with which it is closely connected. Inside, visual
connections and open structures enhance transparency and orientation. A special
focus was placed on sustainability: Sport Arena Wien operates with an
innovative energy concept based on geothermal energy, a PVT system and
thermally activated building components. Through its openness, connection to
nature and flexible use, the facility offers a future-ready centre for
movement, interaction and top athletic performance.
