Description
The residential building, located directly on the
banks of the Isar River and originally built in 1889, was carefully restored
and renovated as part of a collaboratively developed conservation project.
Following a fire in the 1950s, the roof had been reconstructed in a greatly
simplified form. The current renovation reinterprets the building’s original
proportions in a contemporary way while restoring its architectural presence. In
close coordination with the heritage authorities, the façade was refurbished
based on historical findings. Different layers of time – 1889, 1953 and 2023 –
remain intentionally visible, allowing the building’s history to be clearly
read. The project was realised through close collaboration between the
residents’ community and architect Philipp Möller, who was also the client and
designer of the attic apartment in the building. The 127-square-metre apartment
is located within the newly converted roof structure and opens onto expansive
views over Munich’s Isar landscape. Clean lines, custom-built furnishings and a
restrained palette of warm terracotta tones create a calm and timeless
atmosphere, balancing historical substance with contemporary architecture.
