Description
The project goal was to reduce the consumption of living space per capita. «Quality instead of quantity» was achieved by creating small apartments with a space-efficient floor plan and high-level design quality. The focus remained on social exchange and sustainability with regard to construction and building operations. Follow-up projects are planned at other locations. Cube 68 is a pure timber construction comprising 68 fully equipped modules (each 43 square metres). The open through-plan apartments are ventilated and lit on two sides to feature opposing conceptual orientations: a quiet retreat area with private loggia and a communicative kitchen/dining area oriented towards the access gallery. In order to prevent the risk of social isolation associated with small units, opportunities for incidental meetings were created: in the courtyard with benches and a boules area, and in the arcade, where the widened areas offer room for common seating spaces. The modules store approx. 1,200 tonnes of CO₂. Regional, certified wood and pollutant-free materials were used. Thanks to screw connections, the modules can be dismantled and repurposed. The unclad wooden walls in the living space are a special feature in accordance with German Building Class 4. The PV system and its storage capacity produces electricity for each apartment, district heating is used, and heat recovery ensures ventilation for each residence. There are also charging points for 40 e-bikes.
