Description
The Vorstadt school
complex, built in the 1950s and listed as a building of high architectural
value, is being renovated and extended to form a harmonious ensemble. The new
single-storey structure with a pitched roof is slightly offset between the
existing building and the nearby railroad tracks, helping to frame the
playground as a central outdoor area. The new building is based on a clearly
structured and efficient floor plan concept. The ancillary rooms are organised
as load-bearing, structuring elements between the classrooms in a kind of «bulkhead
construction». At the end of the building, the library and the music room are
oriented towards the neighbourhood. The chosen architectural language is
deliberately restrained. The simple wooden façade integrates the new building
sensitively into the ensemble and pays respect to the design of the historic
building. Inside, carefully selected materials create a warm, inviting learning
environment. The existing school buildings and outdoor facilities will be
renovated and functionally developed in close consultation with the heritage
conservation authorities. Six primary school classes with additional group
rooms and a contemporary teaching staff area will be created in the main wing.
The removal of the former janitor’s apartment in the middle wing will enable
the accommodation of a modern day school.
