Description
The non-profit cooperative Heimelig planned to replace
a 1930s housing estate at Entlisberg in Wollishofen. The elongated site sits on
a quiet ridge with panoramic views over the city. Despite increased density,
the design prioritises generous, high-quality outdoor spaces for residents
while enhancing the spatial quality of the neighbouring context.
Architecturally, a strong formal language and a precise access strategy shape
the character of the housing development. The arrangement of buildings creates
distinct urban identities: recessed façades facing the slope reference the
existing urban grain and evoke a composition of six smaller units, while
articulated rows border and frame Verenastrasse. Compatibility with the
surroundings is supported by omitting attic floors and thus limiting site
exploitation and building height. Covered entrances connect street and garden,
while benches in front of the laundry rooms foster informal interaction. A
naturally lit «rue intérieure» visible from the ground floor links the
buildings on the basement level, creating a space of movement and encounter.
Recesses define a series of varied outdoor spaces alternating between active
access courts and quiet garden courts. A barrier-free «promenade jardin» weaves
through the site, linking these green spaces and connecting them to the nearby
bus stop. Minergie-P certified, the project relies on a geothermal heat pump,
low-tech ventilation via in-unit systems, and active overflow air distribution.
