Description
The Wiedikon Housing Cooperative aimed to replace a
1970s building with energy deficits and non-accessible, outdated units through
a new development. We proposed a mix of refurbishment, roof conversions,
extensions and new construction for Colony 1. Careful phasing and
differentiated intervention depths allowed for a socially responsible
implementation. Architecturally, the new building’s restrained expression
integrates harmoniously with the existing context, creating a cohesive presence
typical for the neighbourhood. A kindergarten and community room connect the
ground floor with the urban realm. Further key elements – such as the courtyard passage, open stairwell to the communal terrace,
and balconies –enhance internal and external connectivity, encouraging interaction
among residents and the wider community. The previously underutilised courtyard
is revitalised into a vibrant shared space. A variety of uses promotes social
exchange and collaborative life. Green spaces, rooftop gardens with an outdoor
kitchen, and herb and berry plantings improve the microclimate through
evaporation and water retention. Through densification and resource-conscious
development, the project achieves ecological and economic value. Existing
structures are systematically refurbished and upgraded for energy efficiency. A
woodchip heating system and rooftop photovoltaics support sustainable energy
use. Insulated and expanded attics add living space and reduce overall energy
demand.
