Description
In addition to the high level of noise pollution (in
the south), Bernstrasse is also characterised by its distinctive topography.
The three new buildings arranged along Bernstrasse clearly address this setting
with their street-side entrances. The middle and largest volume embraces the
neighbourhood square and houses several semi-public and public uses on the
ground floor. The eastern volume forms the end of the development facing
Stollbergstrasse, where the entrance to the parking garage is also located. On
the slope side, the volumes are based on the scale and grain of the buildings
on the Stollberghalde hill. Differentiated height staggering – following the
topography of Bernstrasse – makes the buildings with their approximately 150
apartments appear like a natural structure that blends organically with the
context. The rather small-scale buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries on
the competition perimeter are reflected in the project, titled «Forever Young»,
through its bay-like exterior spaces and vertically structured façade segments.
The cooperative apartments, developed strictly according to the SIA Efficiency
Path 2040, with noise protection to the south, feature characteristic
pentagonal loggias facing the street, which – initially intended for noise
protection – also offer spatial and atmospheric quality.
