Description
Since 1967, the Cité
Radieuse institution has specialised in the care of individuals with physical
disabilities. This project involves the addition of two new housing units,
superimposed on a ground floor where the existing restaurant is expanded and
transformed, reinforcing the base of collective activities. To accommodate a
unique way of living, the design focuses on the interior spatiality of the
residential floors, exploring a specific typology that ensures seamless
wheelchair mobility while creating a gradual transition between private and
shared spaces. The layout adopts an «8» shape, eliminating dead ends and sharp
right angles that hinder accessibility. This fluid configuration allows for a
continuous spatial experience, where every point along the circulation route
offers dynamic perspectives onto the living areas. The figure-eight design also
enables residents to reach their rooms directly from the hall, ensuring
complete privacy without passing through common areas. These shared spaces,
connected diagonally, benefit from distinct qualities of natural light and views.
Additionally, the organic geometry generates a sequence of five-sided rooms,
facilitating daily tasks for both residents and staff while enhancing overall
functionality and comfort. The added construction is hybrid, featuring a
prefabricated wood frame and light cladding that reflects the character of the
existing context: a country home on the hillside.
