Description
A new primary and secondary school has been built in
Zermatt for around 400 children from the region. The light-filled building,
inspired by local architecture, includes a school and other facilities under
one roof. The Niww Walka School blends gradually into the hillside and, with
its differentiated volumes, opens up towards the village. A subtle interplay
between open and closed façades references traditional building types and
establishes a clear articulation. The ensemble consists of seven storeys;
although it has a compact appearance, it creates a new public centre within the
established urban fabric. The atrium is the heart and centre of Niww Walka – a
connecting village square. All paths radiate from here, offering views up to
the top floors. Glazed galleries and low balustrades provide visual connections
and vistas –even for the little ones. The atrium brings daylight into the
interior through five storeys. It connects spaces and people: the canteen,
library and meeting room are adjacent and partially open to the public. The
car-free location, the challenging building site, and the short construction
periods required precise planning and logistics. The rock excavation provided
both space and a unique shelter. Robust materials and clear tectonics ensure
durability and create atmosphere. Inside, the building is characterised by warm
wood tones and cool mineral surfaces – minimalist, landscape-oriented and
welcoming to the children's lively appropriation.
