Huebergass, Bern
Description
The Huebergass housing development in Bern was created
in collaboration with the «Wir sind Stadtgarten» cooperative.
It received the UIA 2030 Award for Safe and Affordable Housing in recognition
of its added social value, strong identity and lively neighbourhood. The alley forms the backbone of the project’s concept
as a lively central axis that provides access to all communal and private
spaces. Its typology was inspired by the neighbourhood and integrates it into
the surroundings. The design relies on robust materials, clear forms, and an
open, interactive structure. Wooden elements featuring staircases and balconies
at the front create lively transition zones between private and public spaces. All 103 apartments feature dual orientation and are
well-lit and designed for flexible use. With an average of 25 square metres of
living space per person, the housing is compact yet is complemented by various
communal spaces that offer greater added value to the ground floor, including a
library, a studio and a so-called «Jokerzimmer», a flexibly bookable guest room. Arcades connect
residents with the community and the neighbourhood. Common rooms, a café,
studios and usable areas foster interaction. Compact volumes, minimised
basement floors and simple building systems ensure economical and sustainable
construction
