Collegium Academicum
Description
The Collegium Academicum in Heidelberg is a self-managed student residence comprising 176 units. Created through a participatory planning process, it provides affordable living space for students and trainees. The building is an example of circular design and life-cycle thinking. Its timber construction system, which does not use metal connections in the primary structure, allows for the easy disassembly and reuse of materials. The student residence is a practical model of space-efficient living with a high quality of life, aiming to reduce to the essentials (sufficiency). Its flexible floor plans allow residents to remodel their rooms at any time to adapt them to their current and future needs, such as for greater accessibility. The Collegium Academicum is a creative centre for learning and cultural exchange, playing a key role in the revitalisation of the long-derelict Rohrbach district. The approach of 'project learning' through shared responsibility in self-management improves the immediate quality of life and develops long-term, exemplary skills for sustainable living. The building becomes a laboratory in which residents can reconfigure the utilisation and spatial configuration of flats, negotiating the balance between individual and communal areas. The Collegium Academicum demonstrates how sustainable design principles and participation can create thriving, resilient communities for the future.
