Description
The HPT building complex
was among the first structures built for the Hönggerberg Campus at ETH Zurich,
conceived by A. H. Steiner. The ensemble, listed in the heritage inventory,
consists of three connected, parallel buildings. The renovation encompassed the
southern wing with its office extension, the connecting building, and parts of
the workshop tract. The project combines respectful treatment of the «Steiner skeleton» with high-quality spaces for interdisciplinary exchange, while ensuring
optimised workflows and modern standards for accessibility and fire safety. The
renovation approach pursued three strategies: continuation of the «Steiner concept» with new elements in accordance with heritage preservation and regulatory
requirements, restoration of the original condition, and design differentiation
of new elements in areas without restrictions. Previously painted-over wall
panels are now recognisable again as exposed concrete, revealing the structural
rhythm in the corridors. Fire safety regulations necessitated new door concepts
and escape routes, while SIA 500 required adjustments to handrails, lighting
and sanitary facilities. The lighting was supplemented with energy-efficient
solutions, and earthquake resistance was improved. In laboratories not subject
to heritage protection, modern infrastructure was harmonised with the
historical context. The differentiated concept and careful yet substantial interventions serve both to preserve the architectural identity of the building and reinforce its original character.
