Description
The refurbishment of residential buildings A, B and C in Frauenfeld represents a contemporary contribution to preserving as well as enhancing the energy efficiency of residential structures from the 1970s, which consist of rental flats in the middle segment. The architectural concept adds a sensual dimension to the existing rationalist style. A careful colour scheme not only gives the three blocks of flats a stronger presence but also restructures them with layers of crimson balconies along their vertical extension. The front sides of the apartment blocks are now designed in the colours red, yellow and green. This colour differentiation additionally articulates the existing building volumes and offers the residents a new orientation and a changed sense of scale without compromising the original architectural value and conceptual quality. The design elements, which extend beyond the refurbished windows and reveals, are also continued in the stairwells through to the flats. By enlarging the balcony areas and simply refurbishing the flats, the desired increase in living quality is achieved. The surroundings of the residential complex will not be radically redesigned but will be developed in the long term through the involvement of the tenants towards a biodiverse, natural environment, which will make a significant contribution to the quality of life of the entire estate.
