Description
The two sports halls for the Frauenfeld Education Centre and local clubs form a compact square volume in the northern corner of a neighbourhood protected under the provisions of the Swiss ISOSa standard. Their skilful positioning allows for generous outdoor facilities to the south and space for future extensions. Thanks to careful design, the new building is integrated well into the neighbourhood. The stacked gymnasiums have a centrally positioned entrance floor in front for efficient accessibility. Access is from the east via a well-proportioned foyer. The rooms are organised functionally, with identically arranged gymnasium floors. The construction and cladding are made of spruce wood, which characterises the architectural appearance. The clear primary structure of the timber construction is easily recognisable from the outside, and surrounding ribbon windows give the building a horizontal articulation. Wood dominates the interior, creating a warm atmosphere and having a positive effect on the indoor climate. The timber-concrete composite ceiling, a first in Switzerland, is lightweight and has a low natural frequency, which was confirmed by a dynamic analysis. The project emphasises sustainable construction and resource-saving planning. As the client, the public sector uses regional «beetle wood» from the state forest, which minimises transport and production chains. This significantly reduces the environmental impact and promotes the local economy.
