Description
The valley station of the cogwheel railway is located at the foot of the Schafberg on the shore of Lake Wolfgang. It consists of a two-storey main building and a single-storey outbuilding. Together with the existing buildings housing the workshops, they enclose the station area to form a kind of courtyard. A shed roof stretches over the two new buildings, which also creates the platform canopy and a spatial framework for the large station. The folding roof also folds vertically as a second façade level and continues the design motif of the folding structure in the architectural elevations. The intricate impression thus created brings down the scale of the huge building so that it can enter into a dialogue with the small-scale development of the surrounding area. In the main building, the various public functional areas such as the entrance hall with ticketing, exhibition space, shop, restaurant and event area are arranged in an open hall. This hall opens up to the surroundings via all-round glazing in the façades and shed roof, affording views of the lake and the mountains. The materials of wood and steel play a central role. The overlapping of the station typology with the requirements for tourist use traces a wide and exciting thematic arc. «Industrial» materials and a technical design language anchor the building atmospherically in the station typology, while wood creates a welcoming atmosphere for visitors.
