Description
Situated in the centre of the village of Rolle, the plot stretches between two streets. Two built volumes face these fronts, separated by a courtyard. The building on the Grand-Rue features two four-storey buildings separated by a party wall. On the upper ground floor, the courtyard was occupied entirely by a workshop. The project aims to free up this courtyard in order to create a garden. The courtyard façade is restored and a passageway linking the two streets is created. This new access enables the distribution of the flats to be redefined. Vertical circulation and a lightwell are created to distribute the dwellings on either side of the common wall while providing light into the heart of the built mass. The dwellings make full use of the depth of the volume by offering walk-through spaces. Wooden balconies provide quiet outdoor extensions onto the new garden space. Two 2.5-room flats are located on the upper ground floor. A central unit containing the entrance, kitchen and bathroom articulates the space. Two 4.5-room maisonettes occupy the upper floors, following the same layout. The bedrooms are on the second floor and in the attic, thanks to new skylights in the roof. The materiality of the project plays on the contrast between the elements of the furniture, clean and precise, and the nature of the existing walls, curved and irregular. The colour white unifies the spaces of the flat. Like a skin, the rendering reveals the original stones and bricks.
