Description
A reconstruction, a transformation, an addition, a new use of a chicken house, part of a historic building near Brixen. The idea of a retreat, a room for reflection, meditation, rest, dreaming, being yourself. All the new components are handmade and designed according to the principle of building for continuity. The solid stone walls and plasterwork were cleaned and restored to retain their tactility, only filling in gaps or transitions as needed. Enhancements lend a new identity to the whole, such as the gutter as a colourful design element. The new black-pigmented concrete staircase integrates the building into the landscape and becomes part of it. It has been positioned in the complex by extending the wall, introducing a secluded outdoor area. The roof floats atop the stone, letting in daylight and creating a special in-between space as a visual reference. Untreated aluminium sheets are laid on top of it for a handcrafted counterpoint. Special elements such as green-painted eaves and door and window frames in a shade of red derived from the context form a contrast and create an impact. An open OSB box, painted light pink, has been inserted into the interior to form wall panelling, kitchen and bathroom. Despite a minimum of space (15 square metres), this solution creates lightness in the interior. The result is a concentrated space. A thinking space.
