Description
A young family returns to the village of their grandparents, where their new home will be built. He will be the local GP, she will set up a practice for supervision and coaching, and the two small children will attend school in the neighbouring village. Netra lies in an idyllic countryside setting, with castle-toped hills and hiking trails along the former inner-German border. Approaching the village from the outside, a red roofscape is the dominant impression. The property consists of a large meadow, slightly elevated above the Graburgsweg and accessed from the east. The new building will house many functions: three bedrooms, three bathrooms, the coaching practice and a living area with space to work. The local building contractor is available to build the solid structure, and a carpenter is also on site. Our approach is a simple house, brick and carpentry, consisting of insulating bricks clad with a layer of light-red, durable, low-maintenance clinker from the Meissen region. The roof structure is visible in the interior, and sealed screed flooring connects the flowing rooms. Low tech and raw materials. Three houses for living and working, each with its own character, the working areas with small windows toward the neighbours and a door to the inner courtyard, the sleeping wing with galleries for the children’s bedrooms. Here the roof curves upwards to a point, the eaves become a ridge. This room offers a lot of space, with two trusses framing the chimney and the fireplace as the centre between kitchen, living and dining areas.
