Description
The new building deftly makes use of the line of the terrain, so that the ground floor is accessible from the north at ground level. Under a large roof, two slightly offset volumes define a publicly accessible path that runs diagonally through the building and the site. The building blends harmoniously into its surroundings, welcoming visitors and athletes alike, and has become the focal point of the sports facility within this local recreation area. Fourteen rows of columns form the structural and architectural framework on which the primary twin beams rest. The walls between the beams accommodate all the technical installations. All the main lines, conduits and ventilation ducts are visible and run between the secondary beams. A coloured slatted screen wraps the volumes and the pergola on the upper floor, creating a semi-public space in front of the changing rooms. It serves as a meeting, gathering and recreation area and keeps out prying eyes. The bench that grows out of the façade is echoed in the interior. The colour treatment of the surfaces underscores the structural order of the individual elements, provides protection against the weather and vandalism, and culminates in an art project by Nic Hess. The building strives for efficiency and sustainability in construction, a logical embedding of technology and multifunctionality of architectural means. The simplicity of the «festive wooden house at the edge of the forest» conceals the complex integration of state-of-the-art technology.
