Description

The listed building on the Zürichberg was gutted in the 1980s. The attic, at that time converted into an apartment, was further obscured by later interventions that had an oppressive effect. The play between inside and outside, between lining and clothing, is the guiding idea and design element of the renovation. The redesign of the entrance and kitchen areas has clarified and calmed the arrival zone. The kitchen blends seamlessly into the wall of cupboards leading to the hallway and can be closed off with a double door. The room disappears behind the panelled door. The entrance area – the petrol-coloured lining – welcomes visitors. They enter the kitchen, where the play between inside and outside continues. Details such as the material of the existing cherry wood flooring have been incorporated into the wood handles of the cabinets. Amber-coloured inlays in the natural stone covering and its green colour harmonise with and complete the colour and material concept. Seamless flooring covers the staircase and leads upstairs, where it runs like fabric lining across the floor and walls. Nooks and crannies are designed to suit their function – the bathroom, dressing room and bedroom all merge into one. The cherry wood of the wardrobe brings warmth to this place of tranquillity, while the rattan facing gives it a textile feel. The simplicity of the means and the clear use of colour and material create a harmonious whole.
