Description
The timber residential building, which offers 30 apartments in total, is to be understood in relation to the nearby farm buildings in a neighbourhood that combines the monastic and residential areas surrounding Wesemlin Monastery. Rather than competing with the monastery, the creation of living space in the new residence complements and preserves the atmosphere of the monastery complex with its buildings, outdoor spaces, gardens and trees. The apartments are compactly organised around a core, which is designed as an atrium with a continuous gallery, staircase and elevator. On the ground floor is the main entrance with mailboxes, the entrance to the underground car park, bicycle parking spaces, and an area of approx. 250 square metres facing the garden set aside for medical practices. On each of the first to fifth floors are four 3.5-room corner apartments with approx. 100 square metres of floor space and two 2.5-room apartments offering approx. 60 square metres. The basement with carpark, the staircase core and the demising walls between apartments is made of reinforced concrete to ensure fire and earthquake safety and sound insulation. The supporting structure consists of a wood-concrete composite construction, non-load-bearing inner walls and post-and-beam timber outer walls. The open arcade along the monastery wall connects the new building with the historic monastery complex and completes the ensemble.
