Description
The tree-lined course of the Alte Aare River and the trees along Hans-Müller-Weg shape the setting for the new schoolhouse in Aarberg, creating a linear exterior space between them. The narrow and elongated form of the new building was placed in continuation of the row of trees along the street. Thus, the open space towards the river remains undeveloped, preserving its generous scale. The new two-storey schoolhouse has windows onto both the schoolyard and the river. Broad canopies create attractive, weather-protected outdoor spaces and highlight the relationship between interior and exterior. The building is organised in clusters. On each of the two floors there are five classrooms with windows on two sides. On the ground floor are the kindergartens and the day school with direct access to the outdoors. The five rooms here are directly accessible from outside via the open space on the river side and are internally connected by doors. A central staircase provides access to the classrooms on the upper floor from the main entrance and the corridor on the river side. The classrooms and secondary rooms were deliberately arranged along the quiet schoolyard side. Here again, the main rooms are directly connected by doors, which can be opened for forms of teaching that involve more than one class.
