Description

The listed ensemble of the former Schaefer cloth factory is a gradually growing, additive conglomerate consisting of a boiler house, weaving mill, chimney office, gymnasium and enclosure. The extension buildings follow the ensemble’s own logic of brick buildings with different expressions and supplements these with an identity-lending entrance building and a multifunctional event hall. The façades of the new buildings are distinguished by brick panels that are divided by bronzed aluminium profiles. The paved inner courtyard with a sculptural bronze spindle leads to the vestibule and cloakroom, which makes the historic edge of the square tangible. The foyer of the bright, slatted-roof hall acts as a distributor and houses the bar. The patinated supports become object-like contemporary witnesses to former production. The spatial and atmospheric sequence culminates in the wood and linen-panelled music room, whose lighting is analogous to a starry sky and whose materiality and sophisticated folding are reminiscent of the textile products formerly made in the cloth factory. The desired multifunctionality is achieved through a reverberation extension system, a room partition, a lifting platform and a push stand. A PV system, geothermal energy and ice storage ensure economical and ecological operation.
