Description
The project A16 focuses on the redensification and renovation of an existing building, the remaining brick side wing of a Wilhelminian villa that was partly destroyed during the war. With clear goals in terms of sustainability and the use of resources, the project aims to demonstrate how the preservation of heritage buildings can not only add value to the environment but also enhance architectural quality while creating a new identity for the building. In addition, the young owners raised the question of how they want to live as a family and how the house can evolve with them. This resulted in areas for flexible use on the ground floor, spaces throughout the house for the parents’ home office, and rather small children’s rooms on the upper floor which can be interwoven with a play corridor and transformed into a shared, spacious children’s floor, allowing for both privacy and community. The clients wished to be part of the construction process themselves, giving rise to the participatory architectural ceramics concept «three sisters». The design concept brings together the new rough plaster façade and the existing smooth brick façade by means of blue glazed geometric elements arranged in groups and randomly placed across the light-coloured façade. They form a custom ornamental cladding for the new building. The family produced the ceramics and applied them to the façade with the help of friends.
