Description
The apartment house in Cologne Lindenthal, designed and realised by architect Hans Schilling in the 1950s, is an impressive example of post-war architecture. The two-story, detached building, each floor equipped with its own residential unit, creates a sacred atmosphere through its spatial proportions and materiality, reminiscent of the significant church buildings by Hans Schilling. Particularly worth preserving are the locally crafted glass elements by artist and glass painter Friedrich Hans «Fritz» Lauten, who created unique artworks during his temporary stay in the building. The owner, who grew up in this house, has a deep connection to its spaces, history and valuable architectural details. The desire for a careful intervention that preserved the character of the house was important for both parties. By dismantling down to the structurally necessary elements, a flowing and open floor plan was achieved, allowing for maximum freedom and flexibility. The result is a large space complemented by thoughtfully placed islands in the form of furniture elements.
