Description
The ATTO Suites in the
historic centre of San Candido, set beneath magnificent Mount Haunold, is a new
guesthouse with seven holiday suites that sees itself as a «home away from home». On the ground floor, a new restaurant with a farm-to-table
concept uses the guest garden on the mountain side and connects to the
pedestrian zone via a new pathway. In the interest of the local population, the
project also aims to have the address eventually take on a more public
character. The building’s position and orientation, unlike those of its
predecessor, are rooted in the historically evolved development structure,
allowing it to stand out as an independent building with its gabled front and yet
carry on the character of the location. Each of the suites is oriented towards
at least two sides and has its own loggia that serves as a kind of theatre box
looking out onto the scenery – starring the mountain panorama. Drop-shaped
ornamentation can be found throughout the project as a recurring element with
references to alpine traditions. The use of regional wood including spruce and
fragrant stone pine harmonises with the tinted insulating concrete façade as
well as the handcrafted terrazzo floors, the plaster and the roof tiles, which
in colour and grain refer to the local Sesto brook stone. Many important historical
buildings in the immediate vicinity were built from this stone – including the twelfth-century
church. Thus the materials used in the new building also reflect the history of
the place.
