Description

The original building on Neustadtstrasse in Lucerne was erected in 1962 and no longer met today’s requirements in terms of technology and design. When a study was commissioned, the client decided to renew the property through a total renovation. The existing building was dismantled down to the static structure. The load-bearing façade supports had to be replaced with new ones, while the filigree concrete ceilings could be left in place and merely reinforced slightly. A total of 54 apartments with 2.5 to 5.5 rooms as well as shops and offices were realised. The ground floor and the office floor above are designed as a two-storey base. In order to offer better quality of living, the façades were expanded with new continuous and column-free balcony elements. The façade is divided horizontally by the balconies in front of it, creating protected outdoor zones. Semi-circular recesses in the balcony areas that coincide with the partition walls dividing apartments articulate the façade vertically and reveal the scale of the individual apartments. At the same time, the recess prevents unwanted glimpses into the neighbouring apartment. A uniform materialisation of the façades and balconies with prefabricated, slightly greenish concrete elements ties in with the identity of the solid construction in the perimeter block development. The staircases are lined with pale artificial stone.
