Description

Functional and spatial reorganisation of a structural conglomerate

The sports centre opened in 1971 and has been gradually expanded in recent years. With the sports hall and accommodations, the latest expansion was completed in 2021 and the entire facility was sustainably renovated. The towering eight-storey accommodation wing forms the new functional and spatial centre and provides a counterpoint to the sports halls, which merge with the terrain as flat expansive volumes. An essential element of the new concept is the access zone on the lower level. It links the existing to the new structure and connects the ground floor with the extensively ramified basement via a curved staircase. The design vocabulary of the existing buildings with their characteristic concrete elements was complemented with cast-in-place concrete. Together with window frames in robust metal, a new whole is created which takes up the language of form and materiality of the existing building fabric and further develops it within a contemporary aesthetic. The demand for a hostel-like interior atmosphere and high-precision industrial prefabrication led to the decision to manufacture the rooms of the residential tower, including bathroom and shower units, as fully built wooden modules and to insert them into the pre-constructed shell of concrete. Thanks to this latest phase of renovation and expansion, the spatial and functional requirements of the facility are sustainably covered for the years to come.
